In an old issue of Classic Diesels and Electrics, Alan Burrows discusses a 1962 plan to re-build D6100-37 using Class 20 components. This would not only re-engine the North British Class 21 locomotives, but would substantially convert them into Class 20s.
D6130 was supposedly sent to Queens Park to be converted, but because of the dire financial condition of North British this never occurred. What if the government had made a substantial financial investment in the program to save the company and convert a large number of underperforming locomotives into Class 20s? What if the work had been performed by a British Rail works? What would the end result have looked like? |
